A 2012 Comprehensive Gang Assessment reported there are about 40 active gangs operating in Chattanooga, TN. Gang activity is higher in the warmer months when children are not enrolled in school. The gang members and their victims were predominately black and the average age for joining the gang was between the ages of 11 and 12. Only 1% of African American children have an opportunity to participate in mission trips. The values and sense of worth the children gain from mission trips are invaluable. The trips take place in the summer - removing them from an environment that is known for its higher gang activity.
The purpose of THE MISSION is to take inner city children on mission trips. Many of our inner city children have never been more than 100 miles from Chattanooga. The mission trip would give them an opportunity to serve others. Children are naturally compassionate. Providing them with the opportunity to help others will help develop them into caring adults – empathic and generous citizens. Helping others make them better citizens while providing a needed resource to a community, city or country that may not be able to afford to pay for services. Community service and mission work provide a stepping stone for children to see things in a different light.
